IME on Windows 2000.
Home Up IME on Windows XP. IME on Windows 2000.

This page explains the steps you need to take to install Chinese fonts and an Input Method Editor (IME) on a Windows 2000 system.

With Windows 2000 and XP, the IME support is much better integrated into the system than it is with Windows 9x, Windows-ME or Windows-NT4. In fact, once you have the fonts and IME installed, nearly any Windows application is capable of interacting with the IME to accept Chinese input.

Start by going to Start->Settings->Control panel, and select "Regional Options" from the control panel. Down at the bottom of the general tab will be a section called "Language settings for the system". You can pick one or both of "Simplified Chinese" and "Traditional Chinese".

Note: You may need to have the CDROM that Windows-2000 was installed from handy. Once you are done, it will look something like this:

You will need to click the "Apply" button before the settings take effect, and it is quite likely that the system will need to be rebooted afterwards.

If you also wish to install the IME, a separate step is required. For this, select the "Input Locales" tab. You will probably just see "English" in the "Input language" box. Select "Add", from the list select "Chinese(Simplified) - MS-PinYin98". It will look something like this:

Once you click OK, the applet will then look like this:

Click Apply, and then exit the control panel. You may need to reboot the system once you have done this.
