4/27/02: Update to version 2.01.  Changes include:

Fixed bug where exporting vocabulary from builtin PCR text would create databases that would crash the Palm.
Added Pinyin auto-completion to vocabulary editor.

7/15/02: Update to version 2.02.  Changes include:

Vocabulary files are now written out in UTF-8 (Multi-byte Unicode) format instead of UTF-16 (16-bit Unicode).  More friendly to CM systems such as Clearcase, CVS, RCS, etc.
Fixed bug whereby 'ü' was not correctly represented when vocabulary is exported to Palm.

8/10/02: I have a beta version ready which supports the vocabulary editor on all Windows platforms (Windows-95, Windows-98, Windows-NT, Windows-2000, and Windows-XP).  A few additional points:

There is now a single binary for all Windows platforms.  There is now full functionality in the standard version without the need for a special Unicode build.
You must install/configure the IME as described elsewhere in this website before the vocabulary editor can be used.
On Windows-9x, cut-and-paste of Chinese text to/from the simplified and traditional character edit boxes can act a little weird.  The simplified text box assumes a GB2312 encoding, the traditional text box assumes a Big5 encoding.  As an enhancement, I could add entries to the right-click context menu to support cut-and-paste in a UTF-8 (Unicode) encoding.  When you are using Windows-NT, Windows-2000 and Windows-XP, you shouldn't have these problems.

9/1/02: Beta refresh.  A few additional features:

All fields in the vocabulary editor are now IME aware, and will take Chinese input.  It will also deal properly with other Unicode text that you might cut and paste from elsewhere - a common example would be '' (ellipses), which the vocabulary editor used to mangle.
Now supports a 'Show Pinyin' and 'Show Definition' mode, where either Pinyin or Definition is the part of the word that is initially displayed, and the buttons can be used to display the other parts of the word.
Added some heuristics to character paste on Win9x, such that an attempt is made to guess the encoding of the characters and then convert the text accordingly.
Fix a couple of character encoding problems in the PCR lesson database.
Fix some bugs in conversion of simplified characters to traditional variant.

9/18/02: Beta version released.

6/15/03:

The original version of flash 2.0 is here.  First of all, the bad news. To edit vocabulary, you need to be using either Windows 2000 or Windows-XP, and you need to have installed and familiarized yourself with how to use the IME. For information on installing the ime click here. For a tutorial on using the IME, click here.

The reason for this restriction is really quite simple - support for the IME isn't available on Windows-9x or Windows-NT4 (note that the Global IME that is available was attached to Windows NT 4 with duct tape, and hence isn't really usable for general purpose programs).

To make matters worse, this version of the application simply will not run on Windows 95, Windows-98, or Windows-ME. The reason for this is that I make very heavy use of Unicode, and these systems are far too crippled in this area. I have a separate version of the executable for Windows-9x, and while this has no vocabulary editing capabilities, it is capable of loading vocabulary that is created elsewhere, and it is also capable of exporting vocabulary to the Palm.

To download the flashcard program (Windows-2000 and XP only), click here . This version will also work on Windows-NT4, but there is no IME available with which to enter vocabulary.

To download the flashcard program (Windows-95, Windows-98, and Windows-ME), click here . This version does not support the vocabulary editor, however you can load vocabulary files that have been created by other people, and you can use the export feature to create Palm databases.

To download the original version of the flashcard program, click here .  This version does not have a vocabulary editor, but works on all versions of Windows.  It also lacks the ability to write PalmOS compatible vocabulary files.
